ユースホステルは他の旅行客との交流や情報交換が行えるコミュニケーションのための宿泊施設であり、この特色を前面に出してホテルや旅館との競争に勝ち抜かなければならない。また、日本の文化や思想を現代的な解釈で宿泊者に分かりやすく伝えることはデザインの付加価値を得ることも重要である。
そこで、私は日本の生活スタイルである“床座”に着目した。例えば宴会の座敷や掘りごたつは欧米の机と椅子によるものと異なり、知らない相手との距離感が近く、親密感を得やすい。

この日本の床座の空間を床レベルの操作や視線を遮る仕切りによって空間を分節する。大きなワンルームは40cmの窪みと自分で伸縮できる灯籠のような仕切りによるアイレベルの操作によって、繋がりつつ守られた空間となる。
距離感を自ら調節できる空間は、プライバシーの確保というもう1つの課題をユースホステルの特色を遮ることなく解決する。また、床レベルの操作や仕切りのデザインは日本の文化である掘りごたつや灯籠のメタファーであり、海外の旅行者を始め国内の宿泊者にも親しみが湧きやすく、分かりやすいデザインとなっている。

Concept

The Japanese had communicated with mutual on the floor for a long time. I think that this style can be more easily produced communication rather than the sofa in the state, for example, at TATAMI and HORIGOTATSU it closes to approach and bring sense of affinity each other.

Incorporating TATAMI culture into youth hostel, that is, can provide various

interchanging space to many travelers.

Plan

A big ground floor without walling in the plane. Putting community lounge on center the floor and square small private rooms and sleeping spaces around here.

Partition likes lanterns

The private room is designed with box sheet about 40cm low from floor and partitioned with movable lanterns

Inside of the private room is not excluded from the people waking out of, then as for the people sitting down, the interaction with other travelers become acting by eyes coming out of a lanterns and the gap of the floor.
