Knit　 “Doma” and “Engawa”
“Doma” is the entrance hall situated at the same level as the ground outside.
"Engawa" is a place which connects inside other than a house.

In recent years, a youth hostel is declining by a cheap no-frills hotel. As cheap business hotels come to the force, youth hostels are falling behind.
Young Japanese people who prefer more private space than open space tend to keep conventional youth hostels at a distance. This may be one of the reasons.

“Ryokan”is a typical example of accommodations in Japan. Westernized hotels are more and more popular in Japan nowadays. However, one of the reasons why “Ryokan” is still here in Japan must be that it continues to catch Japanese inherent spirits all the time.

In the case of westernized hotels, activities of guests complete within the room. But we can recognize that “Ryokan” seems to be like one “big house” and guests spend a lot of time outside of their rooms.

So, we would like to propose a new feature of a youth hostel like one “big house” which has a sense of unity but also has private spaces.

The room is knitted by “Doma” and “Engawa”

These two are an element which has built Japanese architecture from ancient times.

“Doma” is in the house but people can act there similar to the outside.
“Engawa” has been used as the neutral zone which connects between inside and outside of the room.

The room fringed with “Doma” and “Engawa” can keep the private space like a sandbank.

The space with a sense of unity is created by the room fringed with “Doma” and “Engawa”. This space leads the activity of guests from their room to outside and the hotel seems to be one “big house”.
